15 March 2006 | Chris Walker | The Meres and Mosses | The Meres and Mosses of the north west Midlands form a nationally important series of open water and peatland sites, most of which developed in natural depressions left by the retreating ice sheets at the end of the last Ice Age. There are over 60 open water sites, or ‘'meres’, as well as a smaller number of peatland sites, known as ‘mosses’. Many of these sites are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and their varied water chemistry provides a variety of habitats of interest for their plants and birds. Chris, a recently-retired Project Officer for English Nature, will talk them, in preparation for our 7 May field trip to Whixall Moss and Colemere, in Shropshire. |
